ARCHITECTURAL FRAGMENTS

From Travels to Japan, Italy, and India

at the Lacoste Gallery

25 Main Street, Concord, MA 01742

April 26 – May 24, 2014

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 26, from 3:00-5:00

Lacoste Gallery is pleased to present Jeff Shapiro: Architectural Fragments from Travels to Japan, Italy, and India, featuring sculptural forms that draw on the formal elements of diverse architecture. A renowned, international ceramic artist, Shapiro exhibits, travels, and teaches workshops worldwide. Architectural Fragments, his fourth solo exhibition at the Gallery, is a new body of work inspired by the artist’s travels abroad. From the fluted columns of ancient Rome to the temples, shrines, and altars of Pondicherry, Shapiro’s work transforms the architectural components he encounters in his travels around the world into abstract sculptures in clay, moving the medium beyond its utilitarian purposes. Paired with a selection of tea bowls and sake cups, Architectural Fragments, on view from April 26 to May 24, limns its Japanese, Italian, and Indian origins in ceramics.
