JSB Visits Boston Iaido
Thursday, September 26, 2024
7:30 PM EDT
Hosted in person:
Cambridge War Memorial Recreation Center
1640 Cambridge St, Cambridge, MA 02138
About the Event:
Interested in trying Japanese sword martial arts firsthand? JSB members and their guests are invited to a private session with local martial arts school, Boston Eishin Ryu Iaido. This event is now open to the public for registration.
Iaido, the Way of the Sword, is the art of drawing and using the traditional Japanese sword. Iaido was practiced by the ancient Samurai for centuries. Did you know that actors on the 2024 hit period drama, Shogun, were instructed by masters from the Vancouver Iaido branch?
For our visit, Iaido masters will begin with a presentation to introduce the history and principles of Iaido and explanation of their dojo and lineage. Followed by a demonstration by members of the dojo. The majority of our visit will be a hands-on beginner Iaido workshop for any members who would like to try out Iaido for themselves.
Participants should wear loose and comfortable clothing, and please be advised those participating in the workshop will be asked to remove their shoes. This event is for adults 18+.
About: Boston Eishin Ryu Iaido

Website: bostoniaido.com
Boston Iaido is a martial arts school focused on Iaido. Established in 2003, led by Cuong Nguyen-Sensei 7th Dan, (Renshi) and is an official dojo of the World MJER Iaido Federation.
About: Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido
Iaido consists of a number of techniques, or waza, that represent combative situations where generally one or more opponents initiate an attack. Although the waza represent combative encounters, the deeper purposes of iaido are to develop mental discipline, awareness, and mental and physical harmony through practice and control of body and sword movements.
Iaido is not considered a sport, but rather an ancient traditional art based on a unique oral tradition for the development of mind, body, and spirit. This art form has been passed from teachers to students in an unbroken line over hundreds of years, so it is the responsibility of each practitioner to learn and practice the techniques correctly so that the tradition is preserved and can be passed on intact to the next generation.
Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, meaning "peerless, direct transmission, true faith style", is the most widely practiced style of Iaido in Japan. It has a lineage of roughly 450 years, making it the second oldest martial art form in Japan.
