Our club's first animated film is Miss Hokusai (2015) directed by Keiichi Hara. A fictionalized version of real historical figures, it shows the life and works of Japanese artist and ukiyo-e painter Katsushika Hokusai, as seen from the eyes of his daughter, Katsushika O-Ei. See Edo period Japan come to life in these animated scenes.
Watch the Trailer.
Read about Hokusai on our monthly blog: Famous in Japan!
Films should be viewed in advance of our meetings. This film can be viewed for free on sites like Dailymotion, rented from the Boston Public Library, or purchased online at various sites.
The Japan Society of Boston Film Club meets on the last Wednesday of every other month to discuss great classic and contemporary Japanese films. The purpose of our club is to support the community of Japan enthusiasts in the New England region by creating a space for thoughtful and sociable discussion.
The JSB Film Club Website has supplementary materials for past films available to members. See the member portal for the code to access the blog!
If you have any suggestions for future films for the club, please email joanneha@japansocietyboston.org
