Between the Lines: a Monthly Discussion on Medieval Japanese Women's Literature
Thursday, November 2, 2023
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM ET
Join us to discuss some of the greatest classics of medieval Japanese literature, written by women authors!
Our book for the next few sessions will be The Confessions of Lady Nijō (Towazugatari) as translated by Karen Brazell from the Kamakura period. This session will cover Book 2, which cover the years 1275-1277 in Lady Nijō's life.
Suggested questions to consider while reading:
1. Can we treat The Confessions of Lady Nijō like other Heian period works, despite being written in the Kamakura Period?
2. How does Lady Nijō pay tribute to her genre while also transforming it?
3. What reasons could there be for the lack of reception history?
4. How trustworthy is Lady Nijō as an author?
There are also three optional articles about the novel that are supplementary to our discussion. If you would like access to them, please email joanneha@japansocietyboston.org for the files.
