Private Kintsugi Workshop

Monday, July 10, 2023

10:00 AM ET

(In Person)

GrayMist Studio

364 Huron Ave, Cambridge, MA 02138

About the Event:

We are excited to announce a private, discounted Kintsugi workshop for JSB members, hosted by Crane & Turtle, and GrayMist StudioIn this workshop you will learn how to turn your broken pottery into art, with an easy and food-safe method!

Kintsugi is the traditional Japanese art for mending broken pottery with Urushi lacquer and gold powder. With this technique, we can not only repair broken vessels but also add more historical and aesthetic value. Breakage, in this view, becomes something to highlight and honor rather than to hide.

The class is up to 2 ½ - 3 hours long. $80 class fee includes all materials, and proceeds from the event will go towards JSB operating costs. Please do not bring your own pottery for this class. Space is limited for this event!

Because Kintsugi involves working with tools, potentially sharp pieces of ceramics and porcelain, and a lacquer chemical, participation in this workshop will require a signed waiver. (Print or email to joanneha@japansocietyboston.org)

About the Instructor:

Born and raised in Tokyo, Etsuko has since moved to Boston, and has lived in the Greater Boston Area since 1994. She has published books about the craft in Japan and has organized many Nantucket basket exhibits in Japan. Etsuko shares her love and passion for the craft with many students and instructors in the US and Japan.

If you are not a JSB member, you can sign up here.

*Please note that online only members can attend the online member only events but not the in person member events.
