About the Event:
JSB members are invited to join for a private viewing of tatami craftsmen at the Machiya House in Boston Children's Museum.
Boston Children’s Museum welcomes two tatami-shokunin artisans, Takayuki Umeda-san and Hiroyuki Tanaka-san, from Kyoto’s Motoyama Tatami Shop. Umeda-san is an expert of Kyoto tatami and has a shop in Kyoto’s Tanba region. His son is currently in the apprenticeship at Motoyama Tatami Shop and learning to be a tatami shokunin, like his father. Tanaka-san is a member of Motoyama Tatami Shop and one of the principal staff members at its Tokyo branch shop.
Umeda-san and Tanaka-san will be here to repair the tatami floor of Kyo-no-Machiya, the Japanese House exhibit at Boston Children’s Museum.
During the private viewing, members will be able to view the craftsmen working, ask questions, and listen to the history of the Machiya house as well.
Unfortunately we will not be allowed to enter the house as the flooring is being repaired, however regular admission to the Machiya house do allow walk-throughs if you would like to visit in the future.
The tour is free, but open only to JSB members. Space is limited for this event.
Please be aware that the Boston Children's Museum requires adult visitors without children present, to leave an ID at the front desk of the museum for the duration of the visit.
