What happens to poetic tradition when it’s carried across an ocean to a new continent, only to be locked away in wartime detention centers and concentration camps? In our next Poetry Club meeting, we’ll explore how Japanese-Americans fought to maintain poetic connection when they were rounded up and imprisoned in Word War II camps–we’ll explore how poetry manifested as a form of solace, documentation, and of protest. Participants are welcome to bring original Japanese or English verses that relate to the theme of “Poetry Imprisoned,” as well as verses from other poetic traditions which provide inspiration and comfort. All language levels and knowledge backgrounds are welcome!

About the Speaker:

Michelle Kyoko Crowson is an award-winning writer-translator and scholar of Japanese literature. She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Oregon and an MFA from Vermont College. She is currently translating the collected works of the 18th century haikai poetess, Kaga no Chiyo.
