Seeing Poetry: Waka and Haiku

as Visual-Tactile Art

Tuesday, March 8, 2022

6:00 PM EST

Hosted online via Zoom

(Zoom link is in your registration confirmation e-mail)

When we think of Japanese poems, we often think in terms of sound. The haiku, for example, is a poem composed in units of 5-7-5, while the waka unfurls in 5-7-5-7-7 syllables. These pleasing rhythms are often recited aloud, so English translators strive to share this oral-aural quality with English readers. Two other artistic angles of Japanese poetry, which are even more difficult to convey in translation, are the visual and tactile qualities of poems that have been integrated into objects such as scrolls, poem slips, desktops, and teapots. Join us as we explore ways to read and see poetic art objects from a number of different time periods. Feel free to bring a poetic object to share, whether it’s your own creation or work from an artist you admire. All linguistic and artistic backgrounds are welcome!
