2020 Thayer Award Ceremony

with online sake tasting reception

Thursday, December 3, 2020

from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

On December 3, 2020, we will honor this year's Thayer Award recipients:

Debra Samuels

Japan Festival Boston Committee

Join us to hear from the Japan Society of Boston's 2020 John E. Thayer, III Award recipients, Debra Samuels and the Japan Festival Boston Committee. We invite you to stay after the event and celebrate our honorees with an online sake tasting reception (sake bottles can be purchased in advance).

The John E. Thayer, III Award was established in 1991 to recognize the achievements of individuals, groups of individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the progress of the understanding and friendship between the people of the United States and Japan.

Debra Samuels, cookbook author, culinary educator and exhibit curator, has been working with children and families for four decades. From 2000 until 2017, Debra was a regular contributor to the Food Section of The Boston Globe. She is co-author of The Korean Table and author of My Japanese Table: A Lifetime of Cooking with Friends and Family, both from Tuttle publishing. Debra puts it this way: “Food is an international language, a bridge across cultures. I continue to enjoy educating, entertaining, and encouraging people of all ages to be creative and to care about its preparation and presentation. I see food as the key to a broad and healthy life.”

The Japan Festival Boston Committee was initially  formed in 2012 to put on the first ever Japan Festival Boston in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the friendship gift of cherry blossom trees sent from Kyoto—the sister city of Boston—to Washington D.C. The committee continues to work hard every year in order to bring together all communities as one with musical acts, food, and games. Over the course of eight years, attendance has jumped from 10,000 to 72,000 highlighting the diligence and esteem the Japan Festival Boston has garnered thanks to the efforts of the numerous volunteers involved in bringing about the Japan Festival every year.
