紙かぶと Create Your Own Kami-kabuto - Paper Samurai Helmet!

May 1 - 31, 2018

Boston Children's Museum, Japanese House,
308 Congress St., Boston, MA 02210

May 5th is Boys’ Day, traditionally a time to wish for young boys’ well being and encourage them to become brave and strong.  Families with boys display huge colorful carp streamers called Koinobori outside of their houses. They may also display a miniature set of samurai armor, or a figurine of a legendary Japanese figure. Other ways to celebrate are eating special rice cakes and taking a special herbal bath.

Another popular activity on Boys’ Day is to make a kami-kabuto, a paper samurai helmet. Samurai are warriors who ruled Japan for many centuries. Like western knights, samurai wore armor and helmets to protect themselves in battle. Making these paper helmets is fun any time of year, but especially on Boys’ Day. All you need is a piece of newspaper to become a brave warrior!

Today in Japan, May 5th is also known as the national holiday of Children’s Day, a day to wish for healthy and happy future of all children, both boys and girls.

In the Japanese House, a set of Boy’s Day decoration is displayed for viewing.  Visitors can also learn about Boys’ Day in Japan and create a Samurai helmet out of newspaper.

During the busy days, they will have the guided tours of the Japanese House to accommodate the crowds. During the busy times, they will not have the activity in the Japanese House in order to accommodate the crowds.

Japanese House has limited hours. Please check the specific hours on the day of your visit.
